Uganda Law Reform Commission Launches Resource Book on Succession Law

The Uganda Law Reform Commission (ULRC), in partnership with the International Association of Women Judges – Uganda Chapter (IAWJ), officially launched the Succession Resource Book on 13th April 2026 at the Supreme Court Building, Kampala. The event brought together a distinguished cross-section of stakeholders, including judicial officers, legal practitioners, and civil rights advocates. The Guest of Honour was the Principal Judge, Lady Justice Jane Frances Abodo.

The Succession Resource Book is a flagship publication that offers a comprehensive and authoritative account of succession law in Uganda. Drawing on the relevant statutory framework — including the Succession Act, Cap. 268 — judicial decisions, and evolving legal principles, the publication serves as a reliable reference for judicial officers, legal practitioners, researchers, policymakers, and the general public.

A central feature of the publication is its focus on gender dimensions of succession law, tracing the development of the law in addressing historical inequalities and examining reforms aimed at promoting fairness, equality, and the protection of women and other vulnerable groups in matters of inheritance and estate distribution.

The Resource Book reaffirms the Commission's commitment to promoting legal awareness, supporting evidence-based reform, and enhancing access to justice. It is expected to guide the interpretation and application of succession laws while informing future policy and legislative interventions.
