Translation and Simplification

Translation of the Constitution and other Laws involves the following: identification of the law to be translated and the language, preparation of a concept note, procurement of a consultant, preparation of a draft, validation, editing and proof reading by an independent editor; printing; publication and dissemination.

Uganda Law Reform Commission often translates laws of Uganda into different local languages. The translations are intended to popularize the laws of Uganda and ensure that the law is readily understood and accessible by all Ugandans. The Commission has translated the 1995 Constitution of Uganda into several languages among them include: Luganda, Runyakole – Runyakitara, Lumasaba, Lukhonzo, Rufumbira, Lusoga, Dhu Alur, Lugbara-ti, Swahili, Acholi, Leb-Lango etc.…

Simplification of the Constitution and other Laws involves the following: identification of the law to be simplified; preparation of a concept note; procurement of a consultant (where necessary); preparation of a draft; validation; editing and proof reading by an independent editor; printing; publication and dissemination.

Uganda Law Reform Commission has simplified the Local Governments Act, Cap. 243, Contract Act, 2010, the East African Customs Management Act, 2006, Companies Act, No. 9 of 2012, the Hire purchase Act, 2009, the Mortgage Act, 2009, Land Act, Cap. 227 as amended, The Insolvency Act, No. 11 of 2011, the Prevention and Prohibition of Torture Act, 2011. Other laws simplified are the Domestic Violence Act, 2010, Prevention of Trafficking in Persons Act, 2009 and Prohibition of Female Genital Mutilation Act, 2010.
